Sony a7iv
I purchased this in June 2022 to replace an aging Sony a7ii. This is a hybrid mirrorless camera, so it’s excellent for both photos and videos. It’s weather-sealed, has a flippy screen, shoots with incredible detail, and generally does everything I need. The spec sheet is astounding on this thing. The a7iv is a tool. It’s not particularly sexy, but it is a reliable powerhouse. For more detail, check out my review.
Sony 24mm f/2.8
I bought this lens in June 2022 with the ultimate goal of replacing my 16-35 f/4. While I haven’t sold off the 16-35 f/4, the Sony 24mm f/2.8 is just what I wanted. It’s wide, but comfortable. Feels like it has a place in landscape photography and street, especially if I’m willing to crop in (and I am). It serves the same purpose for me as the 16-35 f/4 but is half the size and it’s a prime. I love primes.
Canon Canonet QL-17 GIII
I’m not a film camera pro, but I like this one a lot. It’s portable and looks beautiful, so I’m always delighted to carry it around with me. Excellent for daily street photography. If you’re looking for an affordable film camera experience that’s a bit more involved than something automatic, I can recommend this.
RØDE VideoMicro
I bought this microphone before I went to Zion National Park in 2019 and haven’t looked back. It sounds perfectly acceptable without adjustment which is fantastic. It’s tiny. The shockmount feels like it’ll break any second but it’s still going. I’ve watched dozens of microphone test videos and this really is the best $50 you can spend.
Sony 85mm f/1.8
Mine has been heavily damaged for 2 years now, but this lens still has much to offer. It’s incredibly sharp and feels like a natural focal length for portraits. It’s a bit weighty, especially compared to its length, but servers its purpose well. It’s also right at home shooting b-roll.
Sony 16-35mm f/4
Mostly retired since I got the 24mm f/2.8. But it’s plenty sharp with respectable AF and it’s a zoom lens. If I need coverage more than extra light or size, this is the play. Having 24mm and 35mm accessible feels like you can shoot any scene.
Slik Tripod Legs + Ulanzi Head
This is a no frills tripod. It’s carbon fiber and weighs .86kg. Combined with the Ulanzi head, this combo is fast, simple and only weighs 1kg. The head is arca-swiss compatible, so I can swap cameras freely between the tripod and Peak Design Capture Clip. It excels at being a minimalist setup, but if that’s not your vibe, I’d skip both of these.
